BALMAR'S FILE TRANSFER (FTP) PROTOCOL

Balmar's File Transfer Protocol (FTP) site is online 7-days a week, 24-hours per day to allow you to upload your electronic files. If you need help, read the "How to FTP" section below for instructions on preparing documents for uploading to the Balmar FTP site.

How to FTP

One of the easiest ways to send your document to Balmar is through File Transfer Protocol, better known as FTP. With a couple of clicks of your mouse button, and a couple of commands, you can easily send your file from your computer or server to Balmar's FTP server. From there, we will retrieve your file and begin work on your document.

What you need:

1.

An Internet connection

2.

A Compression utility

3.

An FTP program

1. An Internet Connection

You can't do much without this. This is the major key to electronic file transfer between your firm and Balmar. Most companies, like Balmar, have dedicated connections to the Internet, usually through a T1 or ISDN line. Some smaller firms may utilize a dial-up connection for their Internet access. Whatever it is that you use, keep in mind, that the higher your connection speed, the faster your file will transfer across the Internet.

Contact your MIS department or help desk with your questions concerning your connection.

2. A Compression Utility

When downloading files to our FTP site, it is important to compress the document. This helps save time and server space, since your file size is smaller. When we receive your file, we will uncompress the file to begin work.

Most companies set a standard on what type of applications they install. Their decision is based on pricing, availability, ease of use, operating systems, and integration into existing computer settings. Check with your MIS Department or help desk to find if your firm has a preferred compression application.

If your firm does not have a set standard on compression applications, there are many sites on the Internet that offer free compression applications. Within the sidebar, to the right, is a list of popular compression clients for Windows and Mac based computers.

Please remember: When creating compressed files on a Mac operating system, please make the files self-extracting and bin-hexed. The above applications allow you to perform these two functions.

Once you have compressed your file, you are ready to send it to Balmar for output.

3. FTP Program

Like the Compression utilities, most companies have set standards on which application to use. Check with your MIS department or help desk to find out which FTP program your firm uses.

If your firm does not have a specific FTP program, and you need to obtain one, the cheapest and fastest way to do so is by downloading the program from the Internet. There are many popular sites on the Internet that offer, mostly for free, FTP programs. Within the sidebar, to the right, is a list of popular FTP programs and sites where they can be found.

When you have all the parts, you are ready to FTP your file to Balmar. If you are planning on FTP'ing via Netscape, connect to ftp.balmar.com. If you need more information on how to send your file to Balmar, click here.
